How to Use the Carbon Steel Weeding Tool
- Identify the Weed: Locate the deep-rooted weed you want to remove. It’s important to focus on one weed at a time to ensure complete extraction.
- Position the Tool: Place the tip of the weeding tool at the base of the weed, as close to the centre of the plant as possible. Make sure to angle the tool slightly into the soil to get under the roots.
- Insert and Lever Gently: Push the tool firmly into the soil, ensuring it penetrates deep enough to reach the weed’s roots. Once it’s in place, use a lever action to gently lift and loosen the soil around the roots.
- Remove the Weed: Pull the weed out by hand while continuing to loosen the soil with the tool. This helps remove the entire root system, preventing the weed from regrowing.
- Fill and Smooth: Once the weed is removed, fill in the hole with surrounding soil and pat it down to level the ground. This step will help minimise disruption to your lawn or garden bed.
- Clean the Tool: After each use, clean the weeding tool to remove any soil or debris. This prevents rust and keeps the tool in excellent condition for your next weeding session.
How to Repair the Area From Where the Weed Was Removed
Occasionally, the weed might be big enough to have stopped the grass growing around it. In which cases there’s a simple fix by following the steps below.
- Loosen the Soil: After removing the weed, gently loosen the surrounding soil with a garden fork or your weeding tool. This helps break up any compacted soil and makes it easier for new grass or plants to grow.
- Fill the Hole: Add a mix of fresh topsoil or compost into the hole where the weed was removed. This enriches the area with nutrients and encourages healthy plant growth. Level the soil with your hand or a small trowel, making sure it blends smoothly with the surrounding ground.
- Reseed the Area: If you’re repairing a lawn, sprinkle grass seed evenly over the patched soil. Choose a grass seed that matches the type of grass in your lawn for a seamless look. Lightly press the seeds into the soil to ensure good contact.
- Water Gently: Water the area lightly but thoroughly to help settle the soil and encourage the seeds to sprout. Keep the soil consistently moist until the grass starts to grow, but avoid overwatering, which can wash away the seeds.
- Monitor Growth: Keep an eye on the area as the new grass or plants establish themselves. Trim any surrounding grass carefully to avoid damaging the new growth, and continue to water as needed to support healthy development.
