Why use 70/30 sand/soil mix

The primary reasons for applying 70/30 is to level out bumps, help seed germinate when overseeding or improve the overall soil composition.

There are many benefits to the lawn and soil when applying 70/30, including improved drainage, reduced moss, faster and improved germination rate when used during an overseed.

By using 100% organic top dressing products, you will also preserve the bio-diversity in the soil and reduce the chance of bugs or disease setting in on your grass.

You’ll also be able to hollow out any bumps or lumps by applying a top dressing to your lawn.

When to apply 70/30 sand/soil mix

The best time to apply 70/30 is during the Spring, Summer or Autumn. You can apply it in Winter too but it may be trickier to spread given the wetter and cooler ground conditions.

If you’re doing other tasks, then the best time is after aeration or scarification. That’s because it allows the sand to make its way into the soil bed a lot easier and quicker.

It’s also best to apply just after overseeding because it will help cover the seed from the birds but also improve seed-to-soil contact. A vital ingredient for achieving fastest germination rates. A further bonus is that it will be protected from any extreme heat when seeding in the Summer.

70/30 can be applied alongside any of our lawn feeds and fertilisers because it doesn’t contain any nitrogen.

How to apply 70/30 sand/soil mix

There are a few different methods you can adopt when applying 70/30.

Option 1 – Drop in clumps and spread with a broom or lawn leveller (aka lawn lute)

Option 2 – Using a wheeled spreader (drop or broadcast)

Option 3 – Using a Landzie compost roller

How much and how often to apply 70/30 sand/soil mix (application rate)

Our m2 price is based on 500g per m2 application rate. However, you can apply anywhere between 500g and 4kg per m2 in one application. How much you apply will depend on your own budget, time and desired outcome.

For example, to achieve a pristine level surface, you’ll want to apply between 2kg and 4kg per m2.

Below is a quick overview to show what you’ll achieve at different application rates

500g to 1KG – Improves seed to soil contact + slight improvement to soil composition

2KG per m2 –  same as above + levels out small hollows + increased improvement soil composition

4KG per m2 – quickly achieves a flat surface by levelling out the worst bumps (golf green style)

When using more product per m2, it’s usually recommended to apply in multiple applications 2-3 months apart. For example, 2KG per m2 in Spring, then 2KG per m2 in Autumn.

By spacing applications apart, you’ll give the materials enough time to merge into the soil bed. If the soil is too dense prior to application, the sand can end up just sitting on the surface and suffocating the soil below.
